Mockingbird

Welcome

Mockingbird is a unique restaurant and live music venue in historic downtown Staunton, Virginia. The Mockingbird restaurant opened to the public on October 2 and the Roots Music Hall opened, after extensive repair from a devastating August fire, on November 14. Craftsmen have restored and renovated over 7,500 sq. feet of space to create a home for this new venture that features the bounty and rich traditions of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

The proprietor, Wade Luhn, brings to this endeavor many years of experience as an innkeeper and organic farmer, and more recently, micro-brewery manager and music promoter. His interests in hospitality, sustainable farming, and roots music have inspired the creation of Mockingbird. Essential to the Mockingbird concept is Luhn’s vision of an unpretentious gathering place where one can experience and enjoy authentic local food and traditionally-inspired acoustic music.

Roots Music Hall: Dinner And A Show

See Event Schedule >>

In a space connected to—but acoustically separate from—the main dining area, the Mockingbird Roots Music Hall will feature roots music in an intimate, comfortable “listening room” environment. Local and nationally renowned musicians will perform a wide array of acoustic music—from blues to bluegrass, folk to old-time, Celtic to Cajun, alternative country to mountain music—in a setting where the music takes center stage.

Mockingbird encourages guests to arrive early and to enjoy a meal in the Music Hall.  When the lights go down, the focus will be on the music, but food and drink service will always be available during the show.

The Music Hall seats 160 people. Please note that we are now asking all those interested in dining before the show to call the restaurant (540.213.8777) to reserve a serving time in the Roots Music Hall.  Doors open two hours before the show. Email

The Restaurant

Reclaimed, vintage and antique oak, heart pine and wormy chesnut provided by:
Appalachian Woods

Mockingbird offers “artisan casual fare” in a warm and inviting environment. The limited, seasonal menu features simply prepared cuisine crafted from the freshest ingredients sourced from family farms and artisan producers in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia. In addition, the Mockingbird bar offers a wide selection of Virginia wines and mid-Atlantic beers, as well as a unique selection of specialty drinks and artisan spirits that reflect the character of the region.

The dining area has been created using a combination of restored, reclaimed, and local materials. Multiple layers of flooring and ceiling materials have been removed to expose the original oak floors and pressed tin ceilings. The bar is made from Nelson county soapstone, the tables from local cherry and walnut. Local glassblowers and coppersmiths have fashioned lighting and accent pieces.
