The Don't Tell DarlingsLocal Singer/Songwriter Showcase: The Don't Tell Darlings/ Lola Mullen

$6 admission | Buy tickets online >>

Call 540.213.8777 to make dinner reservations in the Music Hall.

The Don't Tell Darlings met years ago on the windswept plains of southern Minnesota but now spend their evenings pickin' and singin' in the sweet Virginia hills. They play a mix of long-forgotten and well-remembered tunes, with a healthy scattering of Miss Millie's originals. Their repertoire weaves threads of the old-time, Western Swing, early country and blues, bluegrass, and jug band traditions. Imagine a Depression-era mix tape. At any given moment, the Darlings might be harmonizing like song birds, raising a proper ruckus, or both.

Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Darlings play regionally in Central Virginia and Washington DC, and have toured through New England. In 2009, they released their CD "Fix Your Wagon", which features Megan on guitar and Millie on the banjo. Cville Weekly said of them: "These gals plug bull's-eyes on their banjo and guitar, set the woods on fire with their Hank Williams and Everly Brothers tunes, and play a "Cannonball Blues" that makes our knees knock together. The better for them to keep their rhythm." The Darlings' sound is characterized by tight female harmonies and a penchant for songs that let everybody know: these girls will fix your wagon, and that's a promise.

Lola Mullen

Singer/songwriter Lola Mullen uprooted her life and moved to the Valley five years ago, where she now lives and plays frequently as a solo artists and with a number of local groups. Showcasing a style that borrows equally from blues, rock, folk, and country (with a touch of oddball humor), she uses her velvety vocals to weave new takes on old songs with her own originals. Lola can be found performing with members of the Judy Chops, Jim Waive and the Young Divorcees, the Findells, and other local favorites regularly, so catch her if you can!

“Ted Pitney, co-founder and songwriter from King Wilkie, has just released his debut CD, The Genesee EP. Recorded in Central Virginia with his band The Roosevelts, it draws from a well of Americana while painting with shades more undefined and foreign. It is visceral but arranged. Rock n roll but humble. It’s a 1957 D-18 Martin guitar. Dusty and dirty tube amplifiers. It’s heartache and it’s family and friends. As the designer Charles Eames said, ‘The details are not details. They make the product. The connections, the connections, the connections’."

Sarah White“Sarah's music kills me; beautiful from the ground up, no plastic. I got stuck behind a logging truck today. I was listening to Sarah. It was great.”  - Dave Matthews

“Sarah White’s songwriting brings together rock, country, and punk, inviting comparisons to a broad spectrum of artists including Hazel Dickens, Patti Smith, Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, and Ryan Adams. Her talent for songwriting received national accolades at the 2007 Mountain Stage New Song Contest where she won Best Song for “Sweetheart”, the title track from her most recent EP. Sarah has shared the stage with a variety of acts such as Bonnie Prince Billy, Hall & Oates, Ben Folds Five, Loudon Wainwright III, Lilys, Chuck Prophet, King Wilkie and Justin Jones.”

$10 advance/$12 door | Buy tickets online >>

Call 540.213.8777 to make dinner reservations in the Music Hall.

Doug and Telisha Williams make their home in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can hear, smell and taste that influence on their latest record, Ghost of the Knoxville Girl. Like the very best singer-songwriters, this duo gives a voice to the struggles of everyday people, as well ghosts of the past.

It has been over three years, hundreds of shows, and thousands of miles since Doug and Telisha released their last record, Rope Around My Heart. Since then, they’ve traveled from Florida to Oregon and Michigan to Texas, they’ve played with some of their most beloved heroes - Lucinda Williams, Darrell Scott, Charlie Louvin, and Joe Ely – and been on stage at Anderson Fair, The Birchmere, The Carolina Theater, Godrey Daniels, Madison Square Park and Floydfest.

Trent WaglerJoining Doug and Telisha will be Trent Wagler of the Steel Wheels. Trent is the front man for the Steel Wheels, one of the hottest young bands on the Americana scene today. The Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories between blues and bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stompin’ fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but whistle their own tunes, layering in rich textures and decidedly modern energy to forge a new sound. Accompanying Trent will be Brian Dickel, the Steel Wheels’ talented bass player.

The WoesThe Woes

$10 advance/$12 door | Buy tickets online >>

Call 540.213.8777 to make dinner reservations in the Music Hall.

About The Woes from New York City:  There are a lot of us. Like thirty. We play with groups of up to twenty people, mostly just groups of seven to thirteen. We sound like an idea. Below are some descriptions of things we might remind you of while you are listening to us. Our records are good, our live show is also good - we know how to have fun. Descriptive words: sunset through your backyard windows, the labels on good whisky bottles, potion laboratories filled with vials and strangely shaped bottles in an old book or black and white film, a street musician on some Southern Street before there was radio on a Saturday afternoon with the too hot sun, kids and everyone gathered around - singing louder than the other musicians vying for a crowd. The great depression, dustbowl, aviator sunglasses, American sedans of the 1950's, European race cars of the early 1960's,fracas, anarchy and a conversation with Marcel Duchamps, a Slayer show, a Fugazi show, people dancing slow and quiet, all stories written on paper by Flann O'Brien, riding horses at sunup, the TV Show Carnivale, the TV Show Deadwood, the TV Show Twin Peaks, laughter with large groups of people, spencer tunic photographs, laughing at ones body, the fog one feels on the heels of a four day bender, limes, fresh cut flowers, driving too fast, grade school yard fights, thinking that you're understanding what's what when the sun goes down.

"Think Doc Boggs meets Tom Waits, think Woody Guthrie and Howlin' Wolf, think jug-band, ragtime, and New Orleans funeral parade. Think about no electricity, a wooden stage, a banjo, a french horn and a trombone, a growling voice, a story to tell, and a song to sing. And now think about the music that would survive the Fall, the music that would remain as part of our history, the music at the very root of the Delta, the Dust Bowl plains, the broken city street corners, and the back porch. I'll let that be our jumping off point to The Woes." -- The Velvet Rut

"To say they've got the classic brother duet thing down is an understatement; they own it." - Michael Eck, No Depression

"Eric and Leigh Gibson's sweet harmonies fall somewhere between those of Phil and Don Everly, and Charlie and Ira Louvin...There is little question about the role of the heart in the making of modern bluegrass music and there is no doubt that the Gibson’s apply lots of it to the music they so clearly love to make." -Eric Thom, Exclaim!

"’Truthfully, I'd be recording records every month if we could, because it's such a fun part of what we do,’ says Leigh Gibson, the slightly younger half of the Gibson Brothers. Sibling Eric shares the enthusiasm: ‘I like being in the studio just as much as I like being on stage, and I love being on stage.’ This passion for getting music to their fans lies behind the Gibson Brothers' most recent accomplishment: three exceptional albums in three years. Bona Fide and Long Way Back Home both earned widespread acclaim and topped the Bluegrass Unlimited album chart. Now they offer Red Letter Day, perhaps their most eclectic and energetic session to date. Working with some of bluegrass music's best sidemen during a period of personnel shifts in their own band, the Gibsons did more in-studio arrangement than usual, lending extra spirit and spontaneity to their widely acclaimed and widely known harmony singing.”

"most hip-real-unpredictable songwriter around"    -- Daniel Brindley, Jammin' Java

Karl Straub is a D.C. area songwriter whose material has been covered by numerous artists, including Last Train Home, Mary Battiata and Little Pink, the Grandsons, Mark Noone,Virginia Coalition, Kevin Johnson, Lisa Moscatiello, the Kennedys, Cowlick Lucy, Eugene Chadbourne, and Lee Wilhoit. His songs have been performed everywhere from open mikes to Wolf Trap, the Birchmere, and the Kennedy Center, and reportedly a festival in Antarctica. Straub has been performing original songs since 1985. His former band, the Graverobbers, released 3 albums and 3 singles, as well as contributing tracks to various compilations. "Americana Motel," (a collection of cuts by local roots-oriented acts) featured Straub's material, and a smorgasbord of local players and singers recorded his song "Don't Take Advice." "The songs... are actually tightly crafted pop gems with timeless melodies, great harmonies, and subject matter that more often than not circles around the craziness of love, all delivered with an immediate and organic rush of joy." - allmusic.com

"Take a pinch of plucky banjo, a dash of euphonium euphoria, a heaping helping of rowdy Americana and a whole lotta shakin’ and you’ve got something approximating the feverish frenzy that is a performance by Greensboro, North Carolina’s Holy Ghost Tent Revival." - Seven Days (Vermont)

“Characterized as ‘explosively intoxicating,’ Greensboro, NC's Holy Ghost Tent Revival cannot be pigeonholed into any popular genre. Melding brass with banjo, guitar, bass, drums, and keys this six-piece ensemble boasts an eclectic mash of instruments and styles --  a musical alchemy all their own.

The overall air of their creation breathes a sense of celebration and salvation; of a raucous party where everyone's welcome and where even the most stoic will find their toes tapping and a smile breaking free. It's as if, in the same spirit as the blues greats that traveled the highways of the American psyche before them, theirs is not music to lament life's hardships but rather to celebrate in life itself; with all its hodgepodge of pleasure and pain.

It is this transcendent energy that continuously propels Holy Ghost Tent Revival to play the heart and soul of a North Carolina-born, genre-defying new groove.  With a penchant for crafting thoughtfully playful lyrics and graced with exceptional musical skills, there are seemingly no boundaries for this group as they travel the country spreading the magic of their heart-throbbing, foot-stomping, good-time music.”

Jay Ungar & Molly Mason are extraordinary musicians. If you didn't know it before, you sure did after Ken Burns' The Civil War hit the airwaves. Their performance of Jay's haunting composition Ashokan Farewell — the musical hallmark of the PBS series — earned the couple international acclaim. The soundtrack won a Grammy and Ashokan Farewell — originally inspired by Jay & Molly's annual fiddle and dance camps — was nominated for an Emmy.

Of course Ashokan Farewell is only part of the story.

Since joining forces in the late 1970s, Jay and Molly have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene. With their comfortable sense of fun and their love of music, they make each concert a musical journey — sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. Their incomparable warmth and wit — coupled with consummate musicianship — have delighted audiences worldwide.

Listen to the timeless renditions of hard-driving Appalachian, Cajun and Celtic fiddle tunes, stirring Civil War classics, sassy songs from the golden age of swing and country, stunning waltzes, and deeply moving original compositions. It's immediately apparent why Jay and Molly concerts warm the heart, feed the soul, and appeal to all ages. No wonder they continue to receive widespread critical praise.

They've garnered legions of fans through their appearances on Great Performances, A Prairie Home Companion, their own public radio specials, and work on film soundtracks such as Brother's Keeper, Legends of the Fall, and a host of Ken Burns documentaries.
